Birthready was founded by Helen Lawrence, a practising midwife of 10 years and Mam to two “busy” young boys.
After obtaining a BSC (hons) in Biological Sciences, I was attracted to the area of Health Care. Following training as a registered nurse and working in Cardiology I then completed a conversion course to become a midwife. The last ten years of my career have been spent assisting women during active birth and water birth as well as supporting women through birthing processes involving induction, epidurals and assisted birth: ventouse, forceps and caesarean section. I have enjoyed teaching antenatal classes for the NHS for the last 8 or so years.
Predominantly I now work in the community for an NHS health board. My time is spent looking after women in pregnancy and caring for families with new babies. I continue to deliver babies at home and on a low risk birth unit.
I love to teach. It’s a privilege to spend time with a woman and her family, helping them to get ready for birth and baby. To be part of their journey is something I will never tire of or fail to find joy in.
